Rookie Cooking

In an effort to entertain the teens on centre during school break we often try to create fun group events. Sometimes they involve a hodgepodge of sports but this break involved food, because, let’s be honest, who doesn’t like to do things with food?

(Our friends have accused us of doing these events just so we can have people bring us food. We refused to comment on this accusation.)

It began with the Cake Competition. Six cakes were entered and judged on Taste, Creativity, and Design. Alan’s parents were visiting during this time so they offered to be judges. We also invited our friends Cassidy and Kari. Once the judging was complete the cakes were up for grabs. Other teens “just so happened to walk by” and assisted in this endeavor.

Our second event was a Cooking Competition, roughly based off the many cooking shows we have enjoyed. We rented out the Home Ec room which contains four kitchens. Three teams signed up and each team had 90 minutes to cook and present an entree, a main course, and a dessert.

They were judged on Taste, Presentation and Difficulty. We were amazed at what they produced!

One group attempted a strawberry rhubarb pie with flaky pastry and succeeded! Another continued to surprise us with their creative and “scientific” methods. (They called this meal “The Grenade.”)

Our friend Helen, the Home Ec teacher, joined our judging team. I feel like the three of us probably had more fun than they did!

They weren’t necessarily the cleanest cookers, but it all worked out in the end.

One of many things we love about working with teens in Ukarumpa is their willingness to go along with our harebrained ideas!
